The laboratory has four distinct zones closely coupled to manage effectively the research proposed in section 2.1. (1) A student/staff office area is located by the main laboratory entrance. (2) The diagnostics room is also located on this floor. As shown in Figure 14 this room is already equipped with three large optical table (donated by Kodak), a heat exchanger and several storage cabinets. This area is dedicated to large diagnostics, mainly lasers and visible cameras. (3) The XSPL machine shop is located in the high bay, on the lower level of the laboratory. This shop houses two medium size milling machine and one small Lathe. A smaller milling machine is equipped with a 5 axis CNC system. This shop also has a hydraulic table (i.e. table lift) which can lift 15,000 lbs where LTD will be serviced. This table will lift LTDs to the loading dock level, just next to the experimental hall. This is where the LTD will come in and out of the laboratory. This shop is meant to be complementary to the Physics Machine shop which houses two large milling machines and one large lathe. (4) The other part of the high bay is the experimental hall, where HADES will be built. A platform is required to lift HADES to the diagnostics line of sight. We opted for a platform for three reasons. First, we deemed it practical to lift HADES load region at the level of diagnostic line of sight set by the diagnostics room rather than using a myriad of optics to bring the diagnostics line of sight down to HADES. Second, we need access under HADES to position end-on diagnostics. Finally, the space under the platform can be used as supplemental storage for the laboratory. There is a large overhead crane which travels the whole length of the high bay, which allows us to assemble and disassemble HADES as well as moving LTDs to the refurbishment table.
